Lightning Round (7/18/2017) – 18if | Centaur no Nayami | Knight’s & Magic

Some more drops this season. I’m going to be pretty brief this time around since I need to get through some other shows.

Episode 2

Okay, I have no idea what is the deal with 18if. I thought it was aiming for nonsensical whimsicality but this episode felt more like Nightmare on Elm Street and Alice in Wonderland. I wouldn’t mind the change in tone if I was impressed with this episode but it felt so much less creative than the first one. The animation looked comparatively worse too. I also just can’t relate with Haruto. I don’t mind protagonists being amoral but nothing about Haruto’s shift in character was entertaining. We know nothing about him and he has such a blank face so when he decides to side with the witch, it just felt confusing and uncomfortable to sit through. I think I’ll pass on this show.

Centaur no Nayami

Episode 2

Centaur just isn’t doing it for me. There are attempts in exploring how the setting functions but it feels underdeveloped and misguided. Let’s take the scene where Hime models for a family friend’s magazine for example. You would think a centaur modeling would lead into a discussion about the modeling industry’s standards on body shape but this episode just treats the whole thing as one of the many hijinks Hime gets into. Instead, we just get a brief line saying that the term “snake people” is too derogatory of a term which is pretty random to bring up. It just feels as though the show isn’t that interested in its own theme or at least isn’t willing to commit to anything thought provoking. Maybe if I hear the show’s social commentary improves, I’ll come back to it. For now, I’m calling it quits while I still can.

Knight’s & Magic

Episode 2

Honestly, Knight’s & Magic is fine but I can do without it. In regards to the isekai line-up of Summer 2017, this show pales in comparison to Isekai Shokudou but it’s easily more inspired and realized than Isekai wa Smartphone. I do like the weird medieval mechs and the magic is flashy to say the least. For an isekai show, it at least is well designed and has some personality and a neat gimmick. This might make for a decent filler show for the watch list but for the time being, I’m not going to go out of my way to watch more of this.
