So I got up to the third episode of Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu (you know, three episode rule) and while I still enjoy it, things are starting to wear thin for me. I definitely like this way more than Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru but to be honest, if Katsugeki ends up being a filler show or a drop for me, it really wouldn’t surprise me.
The characters are pretty cool but as I got farther into the show, it dawned on me that archetypes are probably all I’m getting from them. It’s also surprising that them being personified samurai weapons isn’t deeply explored. They just seem way too content with knowing that they’re inanimate objects given personalities. I guess I kind of like how Kanesada and Yoshiyuki argue over how much they can intervene in history but even that was resolved rather quickly in this three episode arc.
The Retrograde Time Army is far worse though. Maybe, there’ll be a distinct face in this group of mindless zombies but so far, this threat is pretty boring to watch. It’s honestly shocking how this show treats revising history as the most boring motivation ever.
The animation is still solid; I can’t deny that. Ufotable draws some really lovely backgrounds for this show and action is a ton of fun to watch. But I’m kind of bothered that Ufotable was hired to animate this. Between this and Tales and Fate, I can’t help but think they could be animating something with more depth and artistry.
