Cinderella Nine – Ep. 1 (First Impressions)

Just speaking business, Cinderella Nine is a smart property. Take baseball, a very popular sport in Japan, and apply that into your tried and true idol raising/gacha genres. Frankly, I’m surprised this combination didn’t come about early on. Instead, what came first was anthropomorphized warships and horse girls. Go figure.

For most part, I found the premiere itself to be following all the familiar beats you have already seen in this type of anime. The passionate main character, the supportive best friend, the initially reluctant new members, and the student council president who opposes the club but inevitably joins anyway. It’s all here. No one is unlikable per se. For what it’s worth, this episode does a good job exploring the insecurities of the recruits, Akane (Yumiri Hanamori) and Yuuki (Saki Minami) and how club leader Tsubasa (Nozomi Nishida) subtly helps them find their grooves. That said, no one really makes a lasting impression either. While watching, I honestly started to call Tsubasa “Honoka” by accident because she really is like that character from Love Live!. For crying out loud, she even has orange hair too.

Even though baseball is the subject of choice, there actually isn’t much to say about the sport this episode. Evidently, Cinderella Nine is more concerned with building the team before putting anyone in a legitimate game. First, we have a round of catch and then later Tsubasa gets the club participating in a mock game with some kids. Basic is clearly the aim here. That said, perhaps things feel too basic. I’ll be frank: there’s too many close ups or still frames used here and whatever animation you do get doesn’t quite capture the excitement you get from a sport. That gives cause for concern since sports series live or die by their animation quality.

There isn’t anything inherently bad about Cinderella Nine but it didn’t exactly sell me either. I wouldn’t mind seeing a little bit more but it wouldn’t surprise me if I don’t for the sake of time. And even if I do resume, it’s kind of hard to imagine sticking with this show for very long.
