What a blunt title. I mean, anyone who watches slice of life/school anime knows that aimlessness is kind of a given.
Anyway, Wasteful Days of High School Girls begins with Nozomu “Baka” Tanaka (Chinatsu Akasaki) beginning high school with her friends, Akane “Wota” Kikuchi (Haruka tomatsu) and Shiori “Robo” Saginomiya. Despite accidentally enrolling in an all-girls school, Nozomu is determined to be popular with the boys and her efforts proceed to annoy everyone around her, old and new. Given that this is a comedy, the likelihood of this goal getting accomplished and everyone getting peace and quiet is looking pretty bleak.
I seem to be in the minority with this but I found the first episode to be pretty funny. The chemistry within the main trio is well-balanced with Nozomu being the chaotic center, Akane the straight man, and Shiori trolling Nozomu for all it’s worth until she’s finally tired of her. One particular gag that stood out to me is when Nozomu reveals she’s given everyone in the class nicknames, many of which are borderline insults. Shiori brainstorms some insulting nicknames and Nozomu has the class calling her one of them, hoping she can live with one of them only to find them as grating as she speculated. Another highlight is at the end where Nozomu gives ridiculous, cliched scenarios about how she might meet a guy, leaving Akane astounded at her stupidity.
Truth be told though, I can see this routine getting old. A lot of this premiere banks on Nozomu and although she is amusing now, her shtick may overstay its welcome at the rate it’s going. There is also the possibility of the show getting too mean spirited with how it treats her. It’s one thing to be annoyed with a friend but it can sometimes feel like Akane and Shiori straight up hate Nozomu. Whatever quality of hers that they like, it’s not made clear in this premiere. It would be wise for the show’s creators to start focusing on other characters. It doesn’t even have to one of the many supportive characters introduced. Just an episode focused more on Akane or Shiori would do the trick.
I’ll give Wasteful Days of High School Girls the three episode rule but it is entirely possible that I’ll grow tired of it just as Nozomu’s friends are tired of her.
OP: “Wa! Moon! dass! Cry!” by Chinatsu Akasaki, Haruka Tomatsu, and Aki Toyosaki
Okay, this OP is pretty great. I love the song’s energy and the final scene where the characters move like paper cut outs of themselves being moved around like stop motion.
