After the battle with the first kaiju, Dynazenon shrinks down into a bunch of collectible toys for Gauma to divide between his new crew. Gauma keeps a submarine looking piece. Koyomi gets a race car. Yume receives a jet plane called “Dya Wing”. Yomogi gets this cool dinosaur looking toy called “Dyna Soldier”. Very funny how Chise gets absolutely nothing. If a peculiar shot in the OP is anything to go by, this totally won’t factor into the plot in any way. I forgot to mention it in the last episode review but it appears that Dynazenon functions compared to Gridman. It’s not linked to a computer and it can be summoned at will so long as you have it pieces.
Last episode, Gauma is the only who actually controlled Dynazenon and he managed to do it just fine. Nevertheless, he thinks the entire crew should be adept at using the mech so he suggests the whole gang trains in their off time. The prospect of training makes sense though it is a funny change from SSSS.Gridman, where Yuta pretty much got the hang of fighting as Gridman and using his power ups from the get go. Everyone agrees to train though Yomogi struggles to attend as he’s busy working at his local supermarket. To be fair, I don’t see the giant robot paying him minimum wage so can you really blame him?
Since Yomogi is a no-show, Gauma checks up on him at his house. I like how Gauma alternates from being brash to being polite. One moment, he’s barging into the bathroom and joining Yomogi in the bath to talk to him. The next, he accepts the hospitality of Yomogi’s folks and worries that he’s taking advantage of it. It’s all pretty funny.
The next day, Yume hangs out with Yomogi to apologize for her behavior the previous day and to practice combining their toys. With the combined form of “Dyna Soldier Wing Combine”, the two fly over to see the part of the city damaged from the kaiju battle. Curiously, the town does not reset like it does in SSSS.Gridman so the collateral damage stays and the townsfolk all remember the battle and presumably the casualties as well. On the way back home, Yume tells Yomogi that she lost her older sister in an accident a few years ago, confirming what the last episode hinted at. I kind of wonder if Yume’s loss factors into her investment in the team. Like, maybe she’s training and fighting so that other people don’t lose their loved ones.
Towards the end of the battle, another monster of the week appears. The gang tries to fight it as Dynazenon but the kaiju is too fast for them to land a hit so Gauma proposes that they separate to even the odds. Yomogi is pretty funny in this fight as his lack of training means he has no idea how to use the video game controller that came with his robot. Fortunately, Yume links up with him and they fight as the toy combination from earlier. During the fight, Yomogi gets called by his boss at the supermarket but he later sees a bus full of civilians trying to escape the chaos, convincing him to get his priorities in check and focus on fighting the kaiju. I was wondering if this show would show the individual pieces in action. That kind of arrangement is usually neglected in tokusatsu, mainly because you may as well use their combined form if it’s an option, so it’s nice that the staff made sure to include one fight with this in mind. The pieces are pretty cool in their own right though I must admit that Gauma’s submarine is maybe the most impractical as it has to be in the water.
Something you may have noticed by now is that the kaijus simply spawn into the world. As far as I can tell, there’s no sociopathic teenage girl creating them like in SSSS.Gridman. While that remains a mystery, the show does reveal that someone is controlling the kaiju to wreak havoc, a group of four Kaiju Users known as the “Kaiju Eugenicists”. This group appears to be this show’s antagonists and they also seem to have a history with Gauma.
