SSSS.Dynazenon – Ep. 4

Despite the third episode ending with Yume wondering if kaiju can resurrect the dead, SSSS.Dynazenon doesn’t really follow up on that. I guess I’ll worry about that later? The show does have Yume investigate her sister some more by meeting up with Kanae. Kanae doesn’t have much info to share on Kano though she does reveal that Kano was a very cheerful person, which is contrast to how Yume remembers her. To help Yume some more, Kanae points her towards another classmate, Urita, who supposedly has video recordings of Kano’s music performances.

Parallel to this, Yomogi trains with the others on mastering Dyna Soldier before heading off to work. He begins to lose focus when he thinks about Yume, especially when Gauma mentions that she’s meeting up with someone. I find it weird that Yomogi got hung up on that considering that he was with Yume at the music club last episode though him not thinking straight is probably the angle the show is going for as the next scene has Inamoto think that Yomogi has a crush on someone. Being the wise 20-30 year old woman that she is, Inamoto encourages Yomogi to ask Yume out on a date, which is funny considering that Yume did ask Yomogi out and ditched him. Still, Inamoto does have a point: Yomogi should try to spend more time with Yume if he is interested in her. While a date might be out of the question, Yomogi does follow through on this advice at the end of the episode when he asks Yume to accompany her to visit Urita.

The next day, we see Sizumu join Yomogi and Yume’s class under the guise of an exchange student. I guess the Kaiju Eugenicist outfit is a good enough disguise. This arrangement is kind of similar to Akane being in the same class as the original trio though it is much goofier and less tense since everyone is aware of what the opposing faction is up to. The only time Sizumu actually comes across as suspicious is when he asks Yomogi and Yume where they keep their Dynazenon components and it is entirely possible that he is telling the truth when he says he’s just curious how they store those pieces.

A curious tidbit Sizumu drops is that his team does not create the kaiju. The monsters are instead born in response to people’s will, kind of like how Akane created her own to fulfill her desires. Admittedly, I don’t know if this detail manifests itself when the action kicks in. Like, the monster of week here can turn 3D objects into 2D and I’m convinced it has more to do with looking cool than any particular human emotion. Maybe, we’ll see an actual example of this in later episodes. Imagine if Yume manages to will a kaiju into existence so that Kano can come back from the dead. Also, I’m not sure I buy Sizumu’s claim that the Kaiju Eugenicists want to use kaiju to create a world where they needed. I don’t know, it just looks like they have the kaiju wreak havoc.

There’s an amusing setback in this episode’s fight scene where Yomogi is sick with a cold. First work, then classes, and now this. This kid has some pretty silly concerns when he needs to fight a kaiju. At least this one can’t be helped. I find it hilarious that this show is even exploring what happens when one of the heroes is sick. That never crossed my mind in SSSS.Gridman and you could argue that being sick would be worse in that show since Yuta is the only one who can fight as Gridman. Good thing Yuta had perfect attendance.

At first, the team resorts to Chise giving Dyna Soldier a whirl and it turns out that she does have the aptitude to pilot it. However, this is Chise’s first time using the robot so needless to say, it doesn’t go very well and the team is forced to pick up a very sick Yomogi from his house. I don’t know if Junya Enoki was actually sick during recording, probably not given the COVID concerns in 2021, but he sure sounds convincing. Hearing Yomogi’s rasp voice and coughs as he tries to do the roll call with everyone is pretty darn funny. As for Chise, I guess she’s a backup pilot for the gang. I’m curious how often she’ll have to cover for someone. This episode does end with Yume catching Yomogi’s cold so I wonder if Chise will have to pilot Dyna Wing next episode.

Like with the last episode, the fight ends with Onija almost getting the axe. I hope this is a recurring thing in the show. It’s hilarious how all the other Kaiju Eugenicists bail once there’s no kaiju left for them to use and the only member with zero chill has a near-death experience.
