Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon – Ep. 10

Another quickie.

  • Munami gathers the restaurant owners once more. That roundtable will never not be funny.
  • The plan this time around is an eating competition to coincide with the village finishing repairs and potentially drawing in visitors.
  • A big concern is that Shui and all four members of Band of Gluttons are shoo-ins to win the competition. Boxxo proposes offering them coke cola to fill them faster and it make them less likely to win. When we get to the competition however, this plan does squat so it ends up being completely pointless.
    • If you told me ahead of time that this damn soda would be a recurring item in the show, I would not have believed you.
  • The competition is fun though I kind of wish all the competitors were familiar faces. It’d be funny with all of Menagerie of Fools participated to increase their chances of getting prizes and as an excuse to eat free food.
  • Shui wins the competition and she receives free access to Boxxo’s wares for a whole day. I love that Munami completely made this up last minute and without Boxxo’s consent. Her deviousness is entertaining.
  • Very funny of Menagerie to assume that Shui is going to share Boxxo’s inventory with them. Props to them though for backing off when they realize what Shui has in mind.
  • I expected Shui to just spam the same foods she enjoyed at the competition but she instead takes Boxxo and Lammis to her old orphanage in the Origin Stratum, the first floor of the dungeon and has Boxxo provide resources for the orphans there. It’s via this plot that we learn about Shui’s wish: to make everyone at the orphanage happy. How wholesome.
  • The geography of the dungeon does perplex me. Like somehow, the Origin Stratum is so far underground that it lacks access to the sun and sky. But then, two of the floors above it do. It’s not like with Danmachi where the dungeon is entirely underground and any semblance of sunlight is artificial.
  • Crazy that Shui offers to pay Boxxo back for all the free stuff. She earned the prize and Boxxo is willing to take the hit on his wallet since she’s asking him to help the orphanage. I don’t think Shui is being selfish or unreasonable with her request and yet, she’s still willing to repay the favor. Shui gets a lot of respect from me with this scene.
  • Some bandits try to steal Boxxo’s stuff at night but he manages to scare them off and take photos of them. The orphanage’s director, who I’m tempted to refer to as “Director Human” based on the logic of “Director Bear”, has a “chat” with the bandits and “convinces” them to back off. Apparently, she’s a retired hunter and a very strong one at that. Very funny note to end the episode on. Honestly, I want to see more of this character.
  • I’m glad the show finally handed the spotlight over to Shui. You watch the ED and the show makes Shui look like she’s the third most prevalent girl after Lammis and Hulemy. Before this episode however, all Shui does is eat food and shoot arrows at stuff. The show has taken its sweet time to focus on Shui but this episode did make me fonder of her so I’ll let the belatedness slide.
