That’s quite the title you got there.
This show has a wholesome premise. Set in a fantasy world, retired adventurer Belgrieve (Junichi Suwabe) stumbles upon an abandoned baby whom he adopts and names Angeline (Saori Hayami). Over the years, Angeline learns how to wield a sword from her adoptive father and she decides to become an adventurer. Fast forward to the present, a seventeen year old Angeline works as an S-Rank adventurer with two teammates: an archer named Anessa (Maki Kawase) and a mage named Miriam (Rumi Okubo).
The running gag right now is that Angeline wants to return home and see her father again, only to get sidetracked with quests and other random shenanigans. I can see this getting old quick and to be honest, it’s a bit contrived that the guild doesn’t honor Angeline’s vacation request when is their fault that she has to work on those days. At least with this first episode, it is really funny seeing Angeline get her well deserved break ruined by a random monster attack or a passerby that she can’t bring herself to ignore. If the show gets very creative with this gag, I can see it lasting for a couple more episodes.
A potential point of intrigue is Angeline’s relationship with her father after so much time has passed. Angeline looks up to Bel but Bel apparently retired pretty early in his career after losing a leg in a traumatic fight with a beast. There’s also one scene where Angeline mentions her father to her carriage driver and the person has not heard of the so-called “Belgrieve the Red Ogre” before. I doubt Bel lied about who he is to Angeline but it does appear that there are some details about himself that he neglected to share or that Angeline misinterpreted. I also have to wonder if Bel is actually as powerful as Angeline purports him to be. Angeline thinks her father is super powerful but bear in mind that the last time she fought him was when she was a kid, long before she climbed the adventurer ranks. That said, there are a couple of scenes that establish Bel as a skilled warrior so who knows.
I hope to see more of Angeline’s teammates. If they’re here to stay in the plot, it’d be a waste not to give them any attention and to have Angeline’s only meaningful relationship be with her father. The premiere does a little bit of that at the end by having Angeline hang out with Anessa and Miriam at a restaurant though the three don’t have any particularly charming banter going on. Angeline does write a letter to Bell about her teammates though it is a cheap excuse for the show to characterize the other two girls via exposition. Hopefully, these two get their time to shine.
Overall, this is a pretty decent premiere. It’s pretty pedestrian and the main joke could get old quick but I think the premise is charming and I can see it getting interesting in subsequent episodes.
