GOBLIN SLAYER II – Ep. 5

Kicking off a new arc in the show, High Elf Archer receives an invitation to a wedding between her older sister and her cousin (don’t worry about it) and she invites her party, Guild Girl, and Cow Girl to come along with her. Unsurprisingly, the most reluctant one here is Goblin Slayer, simply because he’s potentially going to spend days not slaying any goblins. Fortunately, Priestess convinces him to join and the team decides to get as many goblin related quests done before heading off to the wedding. Honestly, I’m trying to picture Goblin Slayer at a wedding. Will the guy actually wear a suit or will he just show up in his usual armor? Also, I love that Cow Girl takes the wedding as an opportunity to ask Goblin Slayer if the two of them might get married one day. This season has been teasing me with romantic subtext between the two and goddamn it, just let the ship sail already!

One of the quests Goblin Slayer’s party takes before the wedding is a rescue operation in a monastery. After clearing out the goblins, Dwarf Shaman informs Goblin Slayer that the goblins were likely trying to steal a stone tablet written in an unfamiliar language. The guild later has the party deliver the tablet to Sword Maiden (Aya Endo) as Water Town happens to be on the way to High Elf Archer’s village. At at glance, Sword Maiden believes that the tablet pertains to magic and not goblins so Goblin Slayer immediately loses interest and he leaves the tablet at Sword Maiden’s temple. I’ll be shocked if the tablet has no real bearing later in the show. I mean, why bring it up then if it’s ultimately unimportant?

Goblin Slayer’s reunion with Sword Maiden is really funny. The man actually has to remind himself that he’s met Sword Maiden before. When the archbishop asks him if he’s thought of her, he only mentions that he’s heard about her during his travels (hardly the answer the former wants to hear). Goblin Slayer goes straight to business and he leaves once he decides the tablet isn’t relevant to his work. Understandably, Sword Maiden is peeved at the one-sidedness of their relationship. In Goblin Slayer’s defense however, he hasn’t interacted with Sword Maiden a whole lot. Their most intimidate and most meaningful moment is when Goblin Slayer promises to slay the goblins in Sword Maiden’s nightmares and that’s about it. Right now, he probably sees Sword Maiden as one of the many clients he’s met throughout his adventuring career so it’ll probably be a while before he looks at her differently.

I can’t help but think there’s not enough of the ladies hanging out in this episode. You briefly see them shopping and sharing stories and it’s all very cute but blink and you’ll miss these scenes. After the fun bro moment Goblin Slayer had with Spearman and Heavy Warrior, I was kind of hoping to see this hangout get the same treatment. I suppose CGDCT antics would be out of place in this show but then again, this show does have its fair share of wholesome and/or silly moments so maybe those would fit in just fine.

After the pit stop in Water Town, the gang takes a raft to High Elf Archer’s village. While meeting with Sword Maiden, Goblin Slayer learns that something has been sinking ships on this route so his team prepare for trouble. Sure enough, a fight ensues once the group sails through cliffs and an unknown foe drops boulders on them. I’m hoping the threat is atypical, if only because that’d spice things up, but it probably will be more goblins so that our main hero isn’t on goblin slaying withdrawal. I doubt the show would dare to kill off Guild Girl and Cow Girl in this fight, they’re too likable to die here, but having them caught in the fray ought to raise the stakes.
