After taking a break, Goblin Slayer and co. head to the top of the elven fortress to route all of the goblins. Their main target is the Goblin Shaman in charge as that could potentially summon The One Who Stops the Water to the fight. You’d think after bringing that up, that giant monster would actually show up. But no, that beast is nowhere to be found. I can’t help but feel disappointed at that.
The fight starts to go awry when the shaman casts some sort of miasma, knocking out everyone but Priestess and giving all the goblin jobbers some free hits (and allow them to sexually harass High Elf Archer because this is GOBLIN SLAYER we’re talking about here). I was afraid that Priestess would cave into pressure. There’s precedent for that and she was notably distressed earlier in the adventure. Fortunately, Priestess manages to stay calm and she casts a miracle to turn the tides. I’m telling you, she’s the MVP of the team. Curiously, Priestess uses her Purification spell. For a second, I figured she’d use it to clear the miasma. To my surprise, Priestess impulsively targets the blood in the shaman’s body, turning it into water and knocking the shaman out (honestly, you’d think it’d outright kill him). It’s easily the most brutal attack Priestess has ever pulled in the show.
Goblin Slayer gives Priestess points for saving the day though Priestess is afraid that she may have performed a transgression against her goddess, the Earth Mother. That could be make for some good discourse but I don’t think this really works for me. I mean, very early in the series, she used her Protection spell to trap goblins inside a burning building. She’s been using her miracles in questionable ways for quite some time now. If the Earth Mother actually found Priestess to be unworthy, she would’ve revoked her blessing a long time ago. Sure enough, this fear fizzles out as the Earth Mother seemingly sends a couple of signs to Priestess, assuring her of their holy connection with each other. I doubt Priestess will use Purification in such a violent way ever again but I have a hard time believing that it actually matters in the grand scheme of things.
Elsewhere, we see Hero (Miyuri Shimabukuro) and her party fighting some demons at a gate to Hell that’s on the verge of reopening. Somehow, Goblin Slayer’s fight at the Elven fortress helps weaken the gate, giving Hero’s party an easier time. Apparently, the gate is what the tablet Goblin Slayer handed over to Sword Maiden was warning about. It seems odd that Sword Maiden said the tablet would be of use to Goblin Slayer, only for her to instead contact someone else while Goblin Slayer indirectly helps with the conflict anyway. I don’t know, maybe I’m missing something here.
Other than that, we just have the wedding between Forest Princess and Elder Brother. I kind of figured Goblin Slayer was going to keep his suit of armor but man, he really does stick out like a sore thumb when everyone else is actually dressed for the wedding. I suppose Priestess didn’t change up her attire either but she is, well, a Priestess. What else would she wear for a wedding? There’s a particularly amusing scene here where Forest Princess throws her tiara in the same vein as a wedding bouquet. All of the major female characters participate in trying to catch it and the show actually has the gall of cutting away before it’s revealed who wins. I guess the show doesn’t want to play favorites with its harem.
