At the beginning of the episode, we are introduced to a new character: the Princess (Rina Hidaka) of whatever nation this story primarily takes place in. Princess wants to be an adventurer but her older brother, the King (Miki Shinchiro) forbids her from going outside. Tired of her sheltered life, Princess plots to sneak out of the capital. This will definitely not become relevant later in the episode.
Meanwhile, we see Goblin Slayer’s party drop Sword Maiden at the capital’s temple and split up for a couple of errands. Goblin Slayer wants to visit a library, presumably to figure out the goblins’ tattoo, and Sword Maiden offers to take him there as it’ll count as a date. Unfortunately for her, Goblin Slayer decides to it put his plan on hold and instead hang out with Dwarf Shaman and Lizard Priest for dinner. I’m not really rooting for Sword Maiden to win the harem race, my top pick would be Cow Girl, but I do feel bad for her. Poor girl barely has a chance to spend time with Goblin Slayer and the one time she does, she quickly gets denied by the writing. I’ll admit that it’s also funny but come on, just let her date the guy!
At a tavern, Goblin Slayer admits to his buddies that he actually enjoyed the non-goblin adventure they had but it also makes him feel guilty about not killing goblins. Both Dwarf Shaman and Lizard Priest assure him that it’s perfectly okay to mix things up once in a while and having difference experiences might help him with his main priority. I like this scene as it provides a more nuanced or at least more refreshing notion than Goblin Slayer wishing he could kill goblins whenever he does a quest that doesn’t involve that. The question I do need to ask however is whether or not Goblin Slayer will actually vary up his adventures going forward. Like, there better be a scene where he’s like, “You know what? I feel like slaying rats instead”.
Elsewhere, we see Priestess visit Wizard’s grave with High Elf Archer as her escort. I honestly thought the show was done bringing up this dead character after her brother went off to fight some dragons so I’m glad to see one more callback. Even though the original party are a bunch of throwaway characters, I like that Priestess hasn’t forgotten about them. Curiously, High Elf Archer asks Priestess if there’s anyone else she wants to see and Priestess says there’s one. Presumably, she’s talking about Fighter, the only other survivor of the original party. Considering what happened to her, I’m very curious to see Fighter make a reappearance.
To my confusion, this reunion gets put on hold as High Elf Archer decides to take Priestess to a bathhouse. Who needs potentially interesting interpersonal drama when you could have lewd shenanigans instead? I find it odd and funny that the show pulls a lot of convenient censoring with High Elf Archer but it covers up Priestess with a towel when it has most certainly shown the latter’s naked body from time to time. Hell, you see it in one shot during this season’s ED.
While relaxing in a bath, Priestess is approached by Princess who proceeds to ask her about her class, equipment, and her Social Security Number. After Priestess answers all of these questions (for some reason), Princess leaves the bath and steals all of her stuff. To be frank, I don’t understand Princess’s plan. I get that she needs a disguise in order to sneak out of the Capital but the thing is that she already has a disguise and it actually makes her less conspicuous than Priestess’s outfit. Also, can Princess use magic? If not, I don’t see what good Priestess’s staff would do for her.
Understandably, Priestess is deeply troubled by the theft. She especially gets upset over losing her chainmail as she’s had that since the beginning of the series and it has a lot of sentimental value as the first thing Goblin Slayer compliment her on. I find it hilarious how everyone is trying to cheer her up except Goblin Slayer, who’s working on some weapons in a different room. Admittedly, that might actually be a smart move on Goblin Slayer’s part. He’s not great with words and he’d probably tell Priestess that killing some goblins will make her feel better. The show does establish that he’s at least sympathetic to the situation as he recalls his father having a knife that he was supposed to inherit before the goblins raided his village.
The next day, Sword Maiden attends a meeting held by the King to discuss various matters. This scene also marks the reappearance of Noble Fencer (Sumire Uesaka), the main supporting character from GOBLIN’s CROWN. I can’t tell if this character will get to do anything in this arc but it’s nice to see her again. Things soon get derailed when a merchant arrives to tell the King that he unwittingly escorted the Princess out of the capital and got attacked by goblins who proceeded to kidnap the girl. The King is hesitant to send his army to rescue his sister as it’ll make the scandal more public and it would give other nations some free PR ammo. Instead of an army, he decides to hire an adventurer to keep the situation on a need to know basis. At first, he asks Sword Maiden to rescue Princess. That sounds like a dumb choice but I’m willing to give the King the benefit of doubt and assume that he’s unaware of Sword Maiden’s past with goblins. Fortunately for Sword Maiden, her hero arrives to take the job.
