Note: I saw the first two episodes of Whisper Me a Love Song at Anime Boston 2024 in an advance screening held by HIDIVE, ahead of the show’s official premiere in April 13, 2024.
At the end of the first episode, Himari declares that she’ll hang out with Yori at the school rooftop every day (platonically of course). I did wonder what would happen if it was to rain. It’s a good thing then that this episode addresses it. In lieu of the rooftop, the two agree to meet up in Yori’s classroom. Not sure how this will work if there are a lot of other third years hanging around but I guess for all intents and purposes, they’ve sorted this issue out.
While hanging out in the classroom, Himari learns that Yori is fond of cats and she asks the latter if she would like to check out a newly opened cat-themed place at the local mall with her, to which Yori accepts. Himari sees this as a playdate though Yori can’t help but see it in a more romantic subtext. It certainly borders on the latter as the day goes by. Himari and Yori go to some other places aside from the cat place and there are a couple moments with a strong romantic undertone, such as the part where Himari lets Yori have a bite of her spaghetti and when the two get matching accessories for their phones. Honestly, I’m amazed that Himari doesn’t realize how all of her actions can be interpreted as flirtatious.
I’m really glad then that this episode ends with Yori getting her feelings through Himari’s thick skull. Himari’s obliviousness is a funny bit but it runs the danger of being stagnant. Having her be aware of Yori’s feelings this early is honestly the right move to do. Granted, it’ll probably still take a while before Himari reciprocates but it should be interesting to see her try to understand Yori’s feelings as well as her own.
There’s sort of a love triangle going on as it’s all but confirmed at the end of the episode that Aki has feelings for Yori. It’s not too surprising as Aki has so far been very chummy and playful towards Yori. What does confuse me is why she hasn’t made her move, especially with Himari entering the picture. Is it a fear of rejection? Was she waiting for the right moment? You’d think she’d confess a long time ago. I also find Aki’s attitude towards Himari peculiar. She clearly sees the underclassman as competition as she’s relieved when she thinks nothing is blossoming between Yori and Himari and worried when it seems like Yori is spending more with Himari and not with her. And yet, Aki doesn’t do anything to beat Himari in the race. Sometimes, she’s encouraging Yori to continue winning Himari over. Maybe it’s because Himari is friends with Miki or maybe Aki thinks she’d make her crush unhappy if she tries to sabotage her relationship with Himari. Whatever the case maybe, this is quite the conundrum and I’m intrigued to learn more about it.
