Restaurant to Another World 2 – Ep. 9

Remember that baker Pikke and Pakke helped out five episodes ago? He’s back and apparently, business has been booming for him, thanks that stew Pikke taught him how to make. I figured it’d go well but it’s still nice to get some confirmation. I’m kind of surprised to see him make a reappearance but I probably shouldn’t have since Restaurant to Another World has brought back a couple of minor characters such as Hannah, Alfred, and Margarette.

Unlike those three however, the still unnamed baker doesn’t get the spotlight in this episode. Oddly enough, that honor instead goes to his daughter Myra (Ai Kakuma) and her childhood friend Johan (Kentaro Kuamagai). After Myra finishes another busy work day, Johan takes her to Nekoya, using the same door that Pikke and Pakke used when they were in the area (which is a pretty cute bit of continuity). At the restaurant, the two order some Macaroni Gratin. Impressed with the food, Myra decides to look into recreating the meal in her world, with Johan offering to taste test. I admit that this segment feels pretty typical. It’s not like this show hasn’t had a character treat their potential love interest to a really nice Earthen meal before. We also have plenty of characters who want to recreate Nekoya’s menu (also, why haven’t they held a competition themed around this?).

I like the interactions between the couple and Nekoya’s staff. Upon meeting Aletta, Myra calls the demon girl cute. We’ve seen many characters get along with Aletta but I don’t recall anyone ever calling her cute until now. Considering how self-conscious Aletta is about her appearance, namely her horns, that must’ve been nice to hear. Also, I agree; Aletta is very cute and she must be protected at all costs. Kuro also has a fun moment here as she keeps offering Myra and Johan a new glass of water whenever the macaroni burns their mouths. Why is she so prepared for this? It’s as if she’s familiar with that sensation. Maybe she and Aletta had another traumatizing experience like they did with brain freeze a couple episodes ago.

We return to Fardania yet again for the second half of this episode. I really need to ask: is this woman a favorite of the original creator’s? I’m not even opposed to Fardania getting the spotlight most of the time, I just want to know why that is the case. Maybe since Fardania travels around the world, checking up on her is more worthwhile compared to other characters. I admit that I was curious anyway about how Fardania and Alice are doing. There’s a couple scenes that tells us all we need to know but honestly, an entire half-episode could be dedicated to Fardania being Alice’s surrogate mother (and I’d gladly watch it).

While checking out a marketplace in a port town, Fardania and Alice stumble upon a dessert that they’ve seen before: fruit jelly. The pair learns that the town receives their stock from Camilla (Ami Koshimizu), a mermaid priestess who leaves at the edge of the town. It’s pretty easy to tell the punchline here but it’s nevertheless a solid one. Just when Fardania thinks she’s finally found the perfect recipe for her one-sided culinary rivalry, she learns from Camilla that the priestess got the idea from, you guessed it, Nekoya. Not only that, and as per usual, Camilla’s recipe is nowhere close to the Master’s version. Poor Fardania. First the toku steak, then the natto and the rice burger. Now, there’s fruit jelly. She’s never going to beat this dang restaurant. I’m only now realizing this has been a running joke but now that I do, I must say that this is one of the best ones in the show.
