After living under a rock and re-reviewing the original show, I’m finally moving forward with Revue Starlight. I imagine the movie is the one that’s most worth talking about but there are a couple of things to blog about first, the first being the three Blu-Ray specials. These are on the short side, being about 7 minutes each. I always feel silly giving short episodes their own episode review but this is technically part of the TV show so they’re each getting a post.
This first special takes place sometime after Karen and Hikari’s revue in the series finale and before the second production of “Starlight”. Hikari and Futaba join Mahiru and Nana in getting their measurements taken by the costume team. Given the nature of the scene, you might think that this is an excuse to show the girls off in their underwear. Instead, the girls just wear shorter clothes. I would’ve been surprised if the special did go that route as Revue Starlight at its most perviest is still pretty tame. That said, it couldn’t resist giving one “valuable” tidbit about Mahiru, for any Revue Starlight fan artist to take advantage of.
Futaba is dismayed at how short she is. She feels it puts a limit on what roles she can take. Hikari then speaks up and encourages Futaba not to give up by citing a story of a famous stage girl who overcame the same exact issue Futaba is dealing with. While Futaba (and everyone else for that matter) is surprised to see Hikari strike up a conversation, she’s nevertheless touched by the effort and decides to address the transfer student by her first name.
It’s nice seeing Hikari be friends with the others. That are a couple of scenes along those lines but even then, she mostly just interacts with Karen. It’s one of the few things in the show that’s left a bit unexplored so I really appreciate this special offering to change that. I have to give the episode credit for having Hikari converse with Futaba of all people. Seeing as Hikari has interacted with Mahiru and Nana before, I’m glad that the show chooses someone that Hikari has barely interacted with. Futaba has almost nothing to do in the second half of the show so it’s nice to see her get the spotlight again.
I find it funny that Karen is off practicing baseball. You’d think she’d be too traumatized to pick a bat up after Mahiru played ball with her in Episode 5. Joking aside, it’s important to see Karen doing her own thing, away from Hikari. The special could’ve easily had Karen help Hikari muster the courage to Futaba. I wouldn’t have minded it but it says a lot more that Hikari manages to speak up on her own.
