Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! – Ep. 7

Episode 7 opens with Kazuhiko and Anna discussing the love triangle between Lemon, Mitsuki, and Chihaya. I like how the two differ on the matter because of their characters. I kind of figured already that Anna would be more sympathetic towards Lemon than Chihaya. Like Lemon, Anna is also the childhood friend who got friendzoned. The two are on the same boat so of course Anna would put more blame on Chihaya on how messy things have gotten and she’d rather have Mitsuki hook up with Lemon (though Anna is aware that Lemon wouldn’t necessarily want that outcome). Conversely, Kazuhiko just wants things to be resolved. I’m more inclined to agree with him that everyone kind of contributed to the drama. Like, Chihaya’s paranoia was certainly a factor but you could also say the same about Lemon’s indecision and Mitsuki’s inability to read the room.

After chatting with Anna, Kazuhiko meets up with Lemon. Compared to the end of last episode, Lemon is a lot more vulnerable and upfront about her turmoil. This scene confirms something I suspected while I was watching Episode 5: that Lemon was taking advantage of her hangouts with Mitsuki. She did intend on giving Mitsuki relationship advice but she gradually treated them more like dates and she was hoping that it could somehow lead to her and Mitsuki becoming a couple. Of course, looking back at it now, Lemon is disgusted with herself.

The next day, Lemon takes the train home while Koto drives the rest of the Literature Club back. To her surprise, Lemon finds Chihaya at the station, who wants to set things right with Lemon by having an honest talk to her. If you’re wondering how Chihaya found Lemon’s location, it’s because she planted a GPS tracker on her sometime during her stakeouts in Episode 5. Definitely a bit creepy but it is funny how the studious Chihaya is actually a bit of a bad girl and to her credit, she does throw her gadget away one she finds Lemon. Oddly enough, we’re not privy to the conversation between these two characters. The episode cuts away as soon as they board the train. I haven’t read the light novels so I don’t know if that’s how it originally goes. I suppose the contents of the conversation isn’t all that important, you just need to know that these two talked it out. That said, not having the scene actually play out undermines what happens at the end of the episode.

Sometime later, Lemon has Kazuhiko escort her to her old elementary school, where she and Mitsuki agree to meet up and talk things out. The school is a very apt choice. Lemon and Mitsuki are childhood friends and Lemon had been crushing on Mitsuki since they were little. It feels right for them to walk down memory lane as they discuss their current relationship. It’s also a good excuse for the show to give us some last minute flashbacks detailing the history between these characters and elaborate how they could’ve been a couple. One bit of backstory that I really like is that Lemon apparently studied like crazy to get into the same high school as Mitsuki. In hindsight, that’s a perfect parallel to the fairytale Lemon pitched last episode, in which the protagonist works hard to reunite with the prince.

There is some dialogue here that you’d think would rock the boat and sir up some drama, such as Lemon doubling down on her confession and Mitsuki even admitting that he felt the same way about her at some point. And yet, the scene plays out rather cordially. I wouldn’t say Lemon is 100% happy with things but she does appear to at least be relieved that she can stop bottling up her feelings and at the revelation that her crush had a crush on her this entire time. When Chihaya does come up in the conversation, Lemon encourages Mitsuki to stick with her.

So yeah, Lemon is still friends with Mitsuki and she and Chihaya end up befriending each other. Lemon and Mitsuki more or less acknowledge that they’re each other’s what-if but they move on. I admit that I find this resolution a bit too ideal. I mean, grown adults can have a hard time hanging out with someone they’re attracted to and that person’s partner. It’s astounding that Lemon can pull that off as teenager. I suppose Chika did the same thing earlier in the show but that was easier to believe since her crush on Shintarō was one-sided and she didn’t really have much of a chance like Lemon did with Mitsuki. Even though it is a bit of a stretch, I am nevertheless content with the outcome. Lemon previously said she wouldn’t get a happy ending for herself so it’s nice that she ultimately does gone (even if it’s in a different sense). Plus, it wouldn’t be characteristic of Lemon to complain about being a third wheel like Anna does on a near daily basis.

Speaking of which, we of course get our usual dose of that shenanigan at the end of this episode. Anna has apparently caused a rumor that she has a boyfriend so she’s scrambling to find someone who can play the part. Naturally, Kazuhiko thinks Anna is about to ask him about, only to be let down a few seconds later (turns out, Anna wants Mitsuki instead, which is a wild pick on her part). You know, if Anna ever does fall in love with Kazuhiko, would a confession even work on him? Poor boy has been misled so much that this is becoming a “boy who cries wolf” situation. Also, I find it hilarious that Anna wants a fake boyfriend when all of her woes would be resolved if she simply got a real one.
