Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! – Ep. 9

You’ll have to excuse the quickie approach for this episode and the next one. I’m currently two episodes behind on Makeine, partly due to being super sick last week but also just negligence on my part. I’m reluctant to write like this but desperate times call for desperate measures.

  • I think the beginning of this episode is the first time Kazuhiko formally meets Karen. Fanservice felt a bit unnecessary but this is a cute enough interaction nonetheless. I like how kind and innocent Karen is. It’s hard to really dislike her even though she’s why Anna can’t hook up with Sōsuke. It also makes Anna’s frustration even funnier.
  • The plot of this episode is Chika finalizing the literature club’s festival exhibit with Kazuhiko. It becomes increasingly clear that Chika is trying to get as much work done on her own. While it’s likely she’s doing this to impress Shintarō, this episode also frames it as Chika trying to gain more self-confidence since she won’t have Shintarō and Koto looking after her anymore. After seeing Anna and Lemon’s recent struggles, I kind of prefer the idea that Chika is completely over Shintarō. That said, the alternate angle provided here would be a great excuse for Chika to use and cover any lingering feelings she still has.
  • We briefly see Kazuhiko, Anna, and Lemon’s class work on their exhibit. Curiously, the show dedicates a few seconds to Anna interacting with a classmate of hers. Anna doesn’t confirm if she and this guy are dating. It would be weird if that isn’t the case after teasing it for a scene but I’m willing to believe they’re just friends since this show doesn’t like to give Anna anything that’d maker her happy.
  • Naturally, Chika gets bedridden from all her overworking. Kazuhiko insists on handling the rest of the prep but he eventually lets Chika finish all the writing and research on the condition that the club handles the rest. I really like that even when he feels the need to intervene, Kazuhiko still has enough faith that Chika can pull through with the assignment and he still sees his friend’s inner strength.
  • Crazy of Kazuhiko to try and set up the exhibit on his own. Of course this is where Anna exerts her Best Girl candidacy once more by rallying everyone to help.
  • Kind of random to have Mitsuki and Chihaya help with the exhibit. I get that they want to repay the favor but it’s not like they’re particularly close with Chika.
  • Not enough Kaju.
  • While the ending is funny for pretending to be a romantic moment between Kazuhiko and Anna, I don’t really like that they pull the bait and switch by having Konuki-sensei spy on them and ruin the mood. Why is this lady so damn creepy?
  • Curious as to what’s in the next episode. All there really is left for the club to is hold their exhibit during the festival but that can’t be the only thin that happens next.
