Princess Principal: Crown Handler – OVA 1

For the Blu-ray releases, Princess Principal: Crown Handler comes with bonus OVAs, one for every movie released so far. These appear to be very short but since they are bonus scenes to the movies, I may as well write about them for the sake of completion. Alternating between the movies and OVAs is going to look a little funky in the archives but whatever.

So during the investigation on Bishop, Team White Pigeon conducted a stakeout on him. In this OVA, Dorothy reveals that while following Bishop to a horse race, she bet on the lowest ranking horse to maintain her cover. To her surprise, the horse actually won and Dorothy earned 1,000 pounds. Not wanting to spend it all on her own, she offers to share the cash with her teammates.

This leads to a discussion on what the girls would like to do with the money, though their ideas do get increasingly unrealistic. Beatrice wants a ton of cream puffs, Chise wants to build a Japanese style castle, and Princess would like to build a cannon that shoots her over to the moon. It’s a cute little bonding moment for the girls, something that’s sorely lacking in Chapter 1. Princess’s idea is definitely the cutest and funniest when you consider that she’s, well, a Princess. If she becomes Queen, she could just use her country’s treasury to build that cannon (admittedly at the expense of tax paying dollars but that’s besides the point). I love how the episode just brushes past Dorothy because she obviously would just waste the money on booze. My only problem with this scene is that this OVA is either a bit uninspired with the direction or on a very tight budget. We don’t get to see any of these silly dreams animated, except for Princess’s.

While all this is going on, Ange does the responsible thing of counting Dorothy’s money and discovers that the bag doesn’t contain all the money Dorothy has supposedly earned. This leads to the other great punchline in the episode, where Dorothy comes clean and admits that she made a second bet that unexpectedly earned her even more money. Out of everyone in the team, Dorothy tends to be one of the more transparent members so there’s something humorous about her not trusting her friends enough with all the loot. To be fair to Dorothy, she did live in poverty as a kid so I can kind of see why she’d be greedy here.

After apologizing for her lie, Dorothy decides that it’s best to hand the money over to some people who need it the most. I love that she and the others settle on their friends at the laundry mill and the orphanage Julie and her friends now stay at. That’s a very heartwarming deep cut. The TV show already put a ribbon on all those characters’ roles but it’s nice to know that they’ll be doing even better.
