Sorairo Utility – Ep. 9

Please excuse the quickie approach for this episode. I was busier today than usual.

  • I enjoyed the flashback scene at the start. I didn’t think it’d be necessary to learn how Ayaka and Haruka met but there’s the interesting revelation that Ayaka initially got into being a content creator as a way to brag about herself to Haruka. It tracks with the competitiveness between these two and it’s surprising that Ayaka felt so inferior to Haruka when it comes to golf, possibly taking the gap worse than Minami ever did with them.
  • In the present, Minami gets concerned that Ayaka hasn’t been posting online or contacting her or Haruka for some time. I like that Haruka chalks it up to Ayaka being busy but when she does message Ayaka, the latter actually sends a cry for help and the next scene shows her super starved for food. That got me pretty good.
  • Ayaka explains that she did a challenge where she can’t eat until she clears a challenging game for content. Minami takes her Switch and clears the game with no problem so clearly, this is just a skill issue.
  • The girls decide to film other content that could maybe boost Ayaka’s online career. Funny how she tries all sorts of the usual videos you’d see on YouTube except for anything relating to golf. You know, the thing that her fans are most likely following her for.
  • Minami complaining that filming is getting too sexy, when she’s the only one calling it as such, is a darn good joke. The yuri bait in this episode is so strong.
  • Ayaka reveals she’s thought about making a shirt encouraging people to keep the greenery on a golf course undamaged. A pretty cool idea for Ayaka to promote golf etiquette and add to the presentation of her videos and posts. Kind of surprising that she didn’t necessarily think to sell it as merchandise but I suppose that’s where the rest of the episode comes into play.
  • It’d be very funny if Ayaka accidentally ordering a whopping 300 shirts gave her more bang for her buck, since it’s a bulk order. I’m surprised there isn’t one line of dialogue making such a comment.
  • Dang, Minami is pretty good with marketing the shirts. I get that the plot is have her get good at golfing but I wouldn’t seeing more of her trying to promote her friends.
  • This is absolutely a nitpick but it sure is convenient that the shirts all fit everyone who buys them.
  • Very satisfying ending. The cool thing about selling out the shirts is that Ayaka gets a better sense of the impact she can leave. As neat as it is to see a bunch of numbers go up, it’s only until Ayaka sees people post about her merch that she truly realizes that she can achieve something that’d get her recognized. Also, it’s a nice message that Ayaka accomplishes this the second she stopped forcing herself to get views and comparing herself to someone else and instead do it simply she’s passionate about it.
