Princess Principal: Crown Handler – OVA 2

Crown Handler‘s second OVA takes place within the middle act of its respective movie. After Ange and Dorothy confirm that the cavorite bombs are in the Vickers Steam Theatre, they rendezvous with the rest of the team in the main hall. There, they learn Beatrice and Chise aren’t big fans of the play and the two proceed to explain why.

To the credit of the writing, each character’s complaint stems from their personalities. Chise is a samurai and one of the main fighters in Team White Pigeon so naturally, she takes issue with how the action in the play is executed. In particular, she dislikes that the dragon animatronic is held back by its technical limitations and that it’s defeated so easily. This almost feels cheeky given how the movie utilizes the prop and how Ange defeats it. Beatrice meanwhile finds fault with how the characters are handled in the play. Apparently, the play revolves around a changeling (and yeah, Ange and Princess get a little nervous when Beatrice mentions it and that is pretty funny). When the changeling’s identity is exposed, her handmaid comes to her defense but she is ultimately banished to a volcano and never seen again in the story. The way Beatrice sees it, the changeling effectively left her loyal servant behind. Given the similarity to Beatrice’s relationship with Princess and the fact that Beatrice is one of the gentler members of the team, it’s easy to see why the fate of the handmaid would bother her.

Sensing the parallel between the handmaid and Beatrice, Dorothy is quick to assure her friend that the team won’t ditch her and leave her to suffer the same fate. As the gang departs from the theatre, Dorothy also tells Ange not to disappear on the team. Considering that Ange did leave off on her own in the two-part finale of the TV show, I say that’s a valid concern. While this is mostly a fun conversation between the characters, this as well as the ending of Chapter 2 does have me thinking that I’ll need to pay closer attention to what will happen to them next.
