And we’re back…kind of. Last time I blogged about Lycoris Recoil, there was a follow-up in production. Sometime after that last post, the production committee announced a series of six shorts, now collectively subtitled -Friends are thieves of time-. One would think that these shorts are the follow-up but apparently, this is a separate production and we’re still waiting for that first project. Kind of odd that these shorts came out first. Maybe the first project really is a second season. As always, the episode review format isn’t the best for anime shorts, especially if they’re about two minutes each, but these particular ones are more or less an addendum to the parent show so they have to be covered for the sake of completion.
Friends are thieves of time skews towards the slice of life side of the plot, which I’m fine with. I did think that part of the show clashed with the more dramatic and action-packed moments but they were a good time so I’m not too opposed to seeing more of it. This first short has Cafe LycoReco hosting an annual flower viewing party. Chisato (Chika Anzai), Takina (Shion Wakayama), and Mika (Kosuke Sakaki) are handling catering duties while Mizuki (Ami Koshimizu) appears to be hosting the party and getting drunk. Mizuki’s antics happen offscreen, which feels like a budgetary decision but going solely off of her audio does let your imagination run a bit wild. Takina gets pretty into the event, staying on top of the supply and demand as well as giving pitch for next year’s party. I really liked seeing Takina grow accustomed to her new life at LycoReco so getting more of that is neat. The joke at the end, where Chisato notices that Takina still has a gun on her, is just great. Why Takina thinks she needs it for the party is beyond me but her obliviousness as to why it’s such a bad idea sells it. I have to wonder if this was actually a recurring issue for her.
