I don’t know if we’ll get more shorts in the future but Friends are thieves of time is canon and it’s looking to be an interlude for the TV show and whatever the next project is so it feels appropriate to call this a season finale.
Anyway, in this short, Chisato and Takina meet three schoolgirls dressed in fake Lycoris uniforms, who claim to be huge fans of Lycoris after watching a movie about them. Knowing the DA, I’m guessing the movie is part of the cover up for Majima’s attempt at exposing them and the Lycoris at the end of the TV show. Not sure how they made the movie so quickly, though (imagine if it was generated by Radiata). While mostly used for comedy, it is kind of interesting to get some kind of follow-up to the cover story. The show really brushed over the public’s acceptance of it. I also love how Takina just doesn’t play along with it, almost admitting to the students that the Lycoris are actually real and even trying to recruit them to the organization. It’s a good thing kids are stupid and these girls just think Takina is a really hardcore role player.
Fuki and Erika (Yuka Yagami) then pay the cafe a visit. There’s a brief yet amusing moment where the girls notice that one of the lead characters of the movie resembles Fuki, with the other resembling Sakura. Pretty funny that those two “served” as the leads considering that they’re actually the B list duo in the show. Chisato attempts to propose new uniforms for the Lycoris, all of which Fuki rejects. I kind of get that they’re too colorful and frilly but considering that it’s public knowledge what a Lycoris looks like, maybe the DA should change the outfits. Definitely the best joke in this scene and the short as a whole is Erika reveling that she’s sitting right next to Takina, even refusing to leave when it’s time to go. I know there’s yuri subtext in Lycoris Recoil but dang, this girl is actually down bad. Too bad her competition is Chisato of all people. The LycoReco staff then reveal that they’re heading back to Hawaii. Fuki scoffs at their goofy vacation get-up, only to then be taken aback at Mika looking the goofiest one of the bunch. I’m kind of sympathetic to her world getting shattered but then again, she clearly hasn’t hung around in LycoReco for long enough.
With that, I’ve finished Friend are thieves of time. These shorts are definitely the kind of material you’d get as Blu-ray extras but for what it’s worth, I had fun with them. It’s nice to have more of slice of life scenes and these being self-contained from the more dramatic aspects of the plot kind of works in the series’ favor. I was hoping for an update on the upcoming project after the last short aired but unfortunately, the production committee are still tight lipped on that. Hopefully, the wait will soon be over.
