Room Camp – Ep. 6

Well, blogging Room Camp has made it this far so I guess it’s here to stay. However short these posts are or are becoming to be, I’m having fun and that’s what matters most.

I was slightly off over the exact timing but as I predicted, Room Camp has included two locations in one episode in order to finish the stamp rally plot in twelve. It may pull this stunt again if it provides another Shimarin episode (honestly, please do). It’s a bit of a shame to see some of Yamanashi skimmed over like that but I suppose there are some locations you wouldn’t have a whole lot to say anyway. The second stop in this episode, for example, is a field that’s unremarkable save for when the Nanbu Fire Festival happens during the summer (and Laid-Back Camp is forever set in the winter).

The show more than makes up for this by focusing more on the characters instead. Specifically, we get to learn how Aoi and Chiaki first met. It’s related to the second location as during a Nanbu Fire Festival in their middle school days, Aoi accidentally hurls fire at Chiaki’s vicinity during the Nanbu Fire Festival and that leads to them formally meeting each other. I couldn’t help but find this funny considering the club’s history with fire and the fact that something so pivotal started because one of them almost got injured. A sweeter moment though comes in a second flashback that reveals that these two had actually had a chance encounter years prior when they were kids. Chiaki wins a lucky two for one deal at a vending machine and offers her spare drink to Aoi who was just passing by. Neither girl seems to remember this but the point still stands. Their friendship has ran longer than they realize. I suppose this origin story isn’t terribly necessary, the thought of wondering how Aoi and Chiaki never occurred to me to begin with, but I nevertheless find it all to be quite heartwarming.

It does surprise me that none of this backstory involves camping in the slightest. Maybe the show will one day reveal how that interest came to be.

Thanks for reading!

I watched the BD extras over the weekend, and the answer you seek can be found there.

    1. The extras for S1? I actually rewatched the one you might be talking about while I was writing this post. It is chronologically earlier but technically, the club has already been formed. I’m thinking earlier than that, what their first camping trip must’ve been like, and what sparked their interest in the first place. Those extras a fun watch though.

From what I’ve watched, those have both been covered… The interest comes from Chiaki’s experience camping with her family (Aoi is being more-or-less dragged in her friend’s wake.) The club’s first camping trip is episodes 4/5 of the main series, delayed because the 980 yen tent took so long to arrive.

My read is that they originally intended to summer camp (“how did it get to be fall?”), but Rin’s example and Nadeshiko’s enthusiasm lead them to try winter camping. Granted, this is more implied than said outright.

        1. Ah, I see what you mean now. Didn’t think Laid-Back Camp would be a story where I need to keep track of the lore lol.

I still would like to see a camping trip pre-club but given what we’ve discussed, that couldn’t really happen. Like you said, they had to wait on what’s likely their first tent in the main show (poor moe girls and their wallets). Guess, I should adjust that last sentence then.
