Here Lies My Hopes and Dreams for My Blog – May 2024 Edition

Time for an update and some reflections.

Anime Episode Reviews

Currently Covering:

  • [Seasonal] Laid-Back Camp (Season 3) – 4/12 eps. (every Saturday)
  • [Seasonal] Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night – 4/12 eps. (every Sunday)
  • [Retroactive/Backlog] Lycoris Recoil – 7/13 eps. (whenever)
  • [Retroactive/Backlog] Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku OVAs – /3 eps. (whenever; resumes ASAP)
  • [Retroactive/Poll] Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury – 1/12 eps. (every day off/whenever)

Scheduling can of course change, depending on what’s going on in my end. It sucks to not review more current shows but two is what I can afford to do and I don’t feel like mandating myself to write two episode reviews on a regular Saturday anymore.

My next day off is Memorial Day so unless I got the time to spare, it’ll unfortunately be a while before I get back to Witch from Mercury. I should be able to cover more of Season 1 at the latter half of June, if not finish it even. Still no decision made on Season 2.

I figured I’d get back to Wotakoi later in the year but I just finished rewatching it so I’m now aiming to cover the OVAs off of the schedule this month.

Backlog:

  • Princess Principal: Crown Handler w/OVAs – /3 movies; /3 OVAs
  • Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out – /1 movie
  • Revue Starlight OVAs and Movies – /3 OVAs; /2 movies
  • Violet Evergarden movies – /2 movies.

Made a slight adjustment to the backlog. I forgot that Princess Principal: Crown Handler has OVAs. No idea what those entails but I’ll likely cover them in addition to the movies themselves. Also realized that I did not include the Violet Evergarden compilation film but I don’t believe that it has any new content. I might still watch it but me covering it is looking unlikely.

Regarding Rascal Does Not Dream, I’ve been holding off on the second and third movies for a US streaming release. That said, I will watch a fansub of Sister Venturing Out and cover the movie before Knapsack Kid releases on Japanese Blu-Ray on June 26, regardless if either or both movies are on US streaming. Screw it, I want to be less behind on things.

I don’t know if I’ll necessarily end things with Revue Starlight but I kind of am saving it for last since it’s my favorite anime stuck in the backlog. Am aware that Rondo Rondo Rondo is a compilation film but I’ll likely still write a post to address the new footage in it. I’ll also write a series review for the Shoujo Conte All Starlight series (which is a chibi short spin-off and not necessarily part of the main TV show). I’m a little tempted to update my episode reviews for the main show. There’s a couple of things I’d like to revise or add. Since I love the show and there isn’t a new anime project in sight, I kind of want to make the revisit last a bit longer. I don’t know how substantially different the updated versions would be though, as was the case with the Laid-Back Camp and Princess Principal redoes. I’m also not sure if I’ll make them separate posts or not. I’ll first fiddle with copies of the old posts and see where it’ll go. If it turns out that I have little to add, I can repurpose that stuff for the Rondo Rondo Rondo review.

I’m okay with having one or two things on hold but I otherwise want the backlog sorted out by the end of August. It’s been almost two years. I’ve had a lot of fun but I’m also at the end of my rope and I’d really like to mix things up on the blog to help it grow. I’m not opposed to adding more anime to the backlog but I make no promises on that.

Screencap Housekeeping

Other than writing, I’ve been trying to finalize screencaps for my episode reviews whenever I have the time to spare. Even though it’ll be even more work for me, I still would also like to retroactively make 30 picture galleries for certain anime where I did 6 pictures per episode. I had second thoughts about it last month but I’m leaning back toward it again. I doubt this will actually help my blog’s performance but I still want to get all of this sorted out eventually.

Top priority right now is Laid-Back Camp as I’m covering Season 3 this season and it feels silly to leave its archive page in such a disheveled state. Right now, I’m almost done with both Seasons 1 and 2. After that, I’ll probably prioritize other anime that are topical such as Love Live! Superstar!!, The Quintessential Quintuplets (it’s coming back from the grave again!), Rascal Does Not Dream, etc.

Manga Volume Reviews

I recently rewatched School-Live! and I started reading the manga. I then remembered saying in my last episode review for the anime that I might cover the manga one day. With the anime backlog coming to an end, I’d like to finally go through with this idea. I’ll cover all the volumes adapted in the anime in one post. I am stickler with covering anime episodes individually but you know what, this isn’t an anime and me covering the manga is an addendum to the anime coverage so I’m willing to bend the rule. After that, I’ll cover the un-adapted stuff per volume.

This is an experiment. I’m only planning to do School-Live! because I love it and I want to discuss the story from where the anime leaves off. If it turns out to be a fun experience, I might pick up other manga related to the anime I’ve covered in episode reviews, such as Bloom Into You for example, as well as light novels.
