Here Lies Xeno’s Hopes and Dreams – August 2020 Edition

Pardon some of the redundancy down below. I’ve been focusing on seasonal anime and therefore didn’t get to some of the things I’ve planning on doing (oops). Note to self: plan less when it’s premiere month, especially since Fall 2020 might be the first normal season in a while. Anyway, let’s just jump right into it.

Seasonal Anime Coverage/Episode Reviews

  • Summer 2020 Anime – Ended up picking four shows but other than Pretty Cure, I don’t feel too confident in reviewing these all the way through. Deca-Dence is particularly in the red. I’ll make my final decisions during the Midseason Rankings.
  • Angel Beats! – Finished. Click here for the archive page if you’re interested. This was a lot of fun while it lasted. I have plans to play and review the visual novel adaptation but that’s far down the line. Also, I’d really like to cover another anime for its tenth anniversary; one that comes to mind is the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica which turns 10(!) in Winter 2021 though that season is looking pretty packed so we’ll see.
  • Yuki Yuna is a Hero – Transitioning between The Washio Sumi and Hero chapters. Just FYI, I am going to watch and review the recap episode as it is technically part of Season 2’s full episode count. Surely I can write something about that…right? Oh and one last thing: I have seen that announcement last night. No other comment until I finish Season 2.
  • Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Side Story – Again, I’ve largely been focused on seasonal anime content and I’ve said before that finishing this show is a low priority. But yeah, I’m kind of at the end of my rope here so let’s aim for this month. I want to be done with this show (let me think about Season 2 another time)
  • Tie-In Movies – Among the tie-in movies I need to review are Violet Evergarden‘s, Bunny Girl Senpai‘s, and now Goblin Slayer‘s. And again, I want to rewatch the respective parent shows first (and update my episode reviews’ screencaps while I’m at it).

Manga First Impressions

Another thing I didn’t get around to last month so let’s aim for this month then. Even though this will be very late at this point, my first post will still be on Spy x Family. At the top of my head, I don’t know any noteworthy releases for August so I may check anything from June and July if I have the time.

Episode Re-Reviews

Still haven’t gotten cracking at the Princess Principal re-reviews due to the seasonal anime but once I finalize my Summer watchlist for the Midseason Ranking, I will finally resume work on it. I want this done before I get to Laid-Back Camp and The Quintessential Quintuplets this fall and while I’m also rounding out the 2017 backlog (which has been on and off, by the way). I still haven’t decided on how to best publish these posts (all at once or one at time) but I’m giving myself a deadline of some kind: September 25th, exactly two years when I first attempted to re-review PriPri. If Crown Handler somehow releases before that (though it’s pretty unlikely), I might try to get the re-reviews done sooner.

Since I’m revisiting PriPri and rounding the 2017 backlog, I have been giving some thought at revisiting and finishing other shows I blogged during that year or tried to. Girls’ Last TourJust Because, March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2, etc. Granted, it’d be a lot of work but it may also be fun and cathartic too since I was not at the top of my game at the time. Maybe this could also be the topic for the next review poll. Feel free to share your thoughts on this.

Screencaps

Not that this matters all that much but yeah, I have been neglecting on my screencaps for a lot of recent episode reviews. Whenever I have the time to kill, I’ll catch up on that.

  1. The Bunny Girl Senpai movie… is very interesting indeed.

And you’ll not want to delay on Laid Back Camp and Quints, lest you end up behind when their sequel seasons air in Winter 2021. Along with the 3rd season of Non Non Byori… Cells at Work! Code Black… Dr Stone: Stone Wars… and Promised Neverland S2… Wow, didn’t actually look until just now, but Winter 2021 is going to be a real cracker of a season.

    1. The plan is to do Laid Back Camp and Quints in the Fall after PriPri. Combined with DanMachi III and The Day I Became a God, I’d be content with blogging in that season.

And yeah, Winter 2021 looks great. Heavy on sequels but most of those sequels I want to watch. Need to try Non Non Biyori in advance.
